2. Use Cases for Semantic Framework

The following use cases illustrate some scenarios that occur within earth observation systems, and help design and prioritize the capabilities of a semantic framework. These use cases are fully described at http://marinemetadata.org/community/teams/workshop2008/usecasesvocs2008.

More detailed scenarios, that illustrate how the semantic framework would actually accomplish key tasks, are outlined in Chapters 6 and 7 below.

  1. Find Data From Providers: A user filters his search using various categories (examples: parameter, data quality, instrument type, discipline) in a one-stop shopping web site.
  2. Create Automated Data Display (a la OOSTethys): A developer wants to create a web site that displays all the observations based on a criteria (example: latest buoy measurements in a regions of interest).
  3. Data Assimilation into Models: A scientist wants to discover and assimilate (integrate) new data sources as inputs to his model.
  4. Submit Metadata to Clearinghouses: A data provider wants to submit metadata records to a clearinghouse.
  5. Find Related Terms: A scientist has a given term, and wants to find other expressions with the same (or related) meanings
  6. Get More Information: An educator wants to find resources that relate to certain data types.
  7. Environmental Concept Maps: A user wants to understand how data fits into a larger environmental context
