Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility provides free, integrated online access to an international network of biodiversity data providers.  Primary biodiversity data is the central focus of GBIF: records that particular taxa were observed or collected at particular locations.  At the time of writing, GBIF encompassed almost 200M records from over 300 providers. Data providers include a diverse array of museums and natural history collections, research projects, monitoring efforts, governmental natural resource management agencies, and conservation organizations, among others. 

GBIF also develops of tools, standards and protocols for to biodiversity data management and sharing, and capacity-building in the form of training and mentoring programs between nations.
