OK, it's time to put the data/metadata question to bed, once and for all.  You know the one:

Automatic Configuration for Running Models in the Cloud

I was really pleased to discover that the newsletter "International Science Grid This Week (iSGTW) referenced SCOOP in the lead article. But running one model in a distributed environment is only one step of a tall ladder. We don't have a world repository of grids and algorithms that we could assemble painlessly. For example, we should be able to ask for a numerical model that produces synthetic winds, storm surge or currents.

The Network Effect and Earth Science

Various recent books (Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes EverythingPlanet Google: One Company's Audacious Plan To Organize Everything We KnowSemantic Web for the Working Ontologist: Effective Modeling in RDFS and OWL ) discuss the concept of the "network effect". The network effect—a form of synergy—occurs when people are rewarded for adding content to a site, and those additions add value to the existing site content. Social sites, collaboration sites, and many information portals and systems are built to leverage the network effect.
