Event Description

MMI proposes to hold free metadata tutorials that are divided into 30-minute modules at the Ocean Sciences 2008 meeting. The modules will be: Introduction to Metadata; Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies, Taxonomies and Ontologies; Submitting Metadata to a Clearinghouse; and Metadata Best Practices. Two modules will be held during each lunch break on Tuesday and Wednesday. All four modules will be provided on Thursday evening.

Background

The developer, Bob, has created a display that presents the most recent values from a selection of observing systems. Some systems he can influence their data presentation, but others use parameter names that are created by the data originators, using no known conventions.

3. Data Assimilation Into Models

A scientist or other investigator who wants to assimilate relevant data into a model.

Background

The scientist, Ely, runs a model based on sea surface temperatures. He obtains a grid of these temperatures from a satellite, but he needs to validate these with in situ observations, and sometimes must use the in situ results as his only way to validate the model's daily run.

The scientist knows about several data sets and has set up the model to use them. But he would like his model to make use of any additional data sources that may become available.

The lay person Fay has a data set that has named parameters -- in fact, the parameter names come from a vocabulary that was created for this community data set. But Fay would like to find more information -- some science papers, but also some general reading material -- about these parameters.

7. Environmental Concept Maps

A user who wants to understand how the system's data fits into a larger environmental context, or what data is available within a larger environmental context.

Description

Given a data variable, a non-expert in a particular science domain like Guy wants to understand how that variable is associated with environmental reactions and the interplay of other variables. Meanwhile, a domain expert like Hil is using the domain model as a way to look for data sources that can help address certain hypotheses.
