Additions and improvements to the MMI Guides

The Guides Team has been working very hard this year in order to advance and expand the MMI Guides. We recently published an enhanced Ontologies section that includes many new guides, greatly expands other guides, and improves the organization of the section. This brings the total number of guides to 76, each professionally reviewed by experienced metadata practitioners.

We have also implemented a new format for the Guides, with many new features. We encourage you to read about them and take a look for yourself.

AGU Reaffirms the Importance of Long Term Preservation and Access of Geophysical Data

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) recently revised and reaffirmed a position statement entitled "The Importance of Long-term Preservation and Accessibility of Geophysical Data." The significance of the role of formal metadata is clearly recognized, and endorsed.

New Ontology Registry under Development

MMI and SURA (Southeastern Universities Research Association) announce the development of a prototype Ontology Registry and Repository for Marine and Environmental Science ontologies.

The registry, which will store ontologies, ontology mappings, and metadata associated with those artifacts, is intended to be available for general scientific use by the end of 2008.

Big Data Translates into Big Opportunities... and Big Responsibilities

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of Google, Nature Magazine presents a look at big data. Many of the articles point to the inundation of data, and demonstrate the need for tools like the semantic web. Just as Google transformed the way we search web content, the semantic web will present innovative ways to store, find, and use scientific data. The semantic web, while virtually invisible, facilitates organization of data in a machine-readable fashion. This organization enables diverse datasets to be connected, using metadata.

Biodiversity Knowledge Organization Systems

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has commissioned a white paper to advise it on its future directions for Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), a rubric that includes the creation, use, and management of such resources as controlled vocabularies, thesauri, gazetteers, and ontologies. Before a final draft is produced, GBIF invites an initial public review of the first draft. The draft may be found at http://bit.ly/GBIFKOS_2010-11-25-0400 and the mechanism for commenting at http://bit.ly/GBIFKOS_Comments which is a page on the GBIF Community Site.

BioPortal 2.0 Released!

BioPortal allows users to browse, upload, download, search, comment on, and create mappings for ontologies.

This newly updated portal allows users to find ontologies based on a variety of criterion, including subject, concept, class name, and attribute. Users can also explore/download ontologies and mappings.

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2009

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is coordinating the Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2009. The goal of this year's Capitol Hill Ocean Week is to highlight the inextricable link between the ocean and the economy, and to suggest tangible ways sound ocean policies might impact improvements in our economy.

Oceans Week 2009 is sponsored by a mix of public and private sponsors. The event takes place June 9- 11, 2009. The three-day event is focused on informing the Congressional Delegation on ocean issues and their effects on our nation's economy.

CF Point Observations Working Group

CIESIN Questionnaire on Geospatial Data Preservation Needs

Geospatial data that represent observations at a specific time and place often cannot be replicated, and explicitly preserving them helps ensure their availability for future users. In an effort to improve geospatial data preservation research and practice, researchers at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University are developing an online clearinghouse to disseminate information on the preservation of geospatial data. They have put together a brief questionnaire that takes ten to fifteen minues to complete, and will help them address issues relating to this topic.

Citations - They're Not Just for Publications Anymore

By definition, metadata exists to describe data or information. Descriptive metadata enables appropriate use, and facilitates re-use of data. Once data has been discovered and used, it should be cited. Publications frequently reference data sets, but the question remains - how should authors cite data?

Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard released for public review

The FGDC Coastal and Marine Spatial Data Subcommittee, chaired by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), developed the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS), and is currently inviting the public sector, those involved in coastal and marine ecology and management, to review and comment on a draft of this standard. Through a common terminology, CMECS provides the vocabulary needed to term ecological and habitat units. The standard also provides the marine community with "a uniform protocol for identifying, characterizing and naming ecological units in support of monitoring, protection, and restoration of unique biotic assemblages, protected species, critical habitat, and important ecosystem components."

Enabling Interoperability — Term by Term

As marine science research collaborations increase, and the marine metadata community grows, more metadata managers are developing controlled vocabularies and using them in well-designed systems. However, when a colleague down the hall, up the road, in another state or another country describes similar data, they use a completely different set of terminology. So, how do two systems that use completely different terminology interoperate?

Once lower-level technical barriers like networking and transport protocols are overcome, the key to interoperability is semantic interoperability. And a major contributor to semantic interoperability will be vocabulary mappings. By developing vocabulary mappings—sets of rules that bridge between vocabularies—systems have the resources to interoperate based on a shared terminology.
