ArcCatalog is part of the ArcGIS software package and includes a form entry tool for developing FGDC compliant metadata. The metadata files can be stored in XML, HTML, SGML among other formats. The files can be edited in the tool. It is also possible to import metadata from other files (e.g., if you develop a template) or to export metadata for use in other files (e.g., as a template).p>

BODC Parameter Ontology Project

The BODC Parameter Discovery Vocabulary (PDV) is a controlled list of over 300 terms for identifying categories of oceanographic metadata. This is currently mapped to the 18,000+ term BODC Parameter Usage Vocabulary, an internationally renowned dictionary for describing data values.

Chew 'N Spit Pre-Parser for Metadata

This parser converts metadata records that cannot be parsed by MP into records that can be parsed by MP. It takes as input a poorly-formatted metadata file and, optionally, a list of element aliases, and outputs (1) a metadata file that can be read by both mp and xtme and (2) a file listing all of the lines that it couldn't figure out where to put.

Class Ncx Crawler

Java standalone application to crawl recursively a local directory tree and extract the metadata from all netcdf files. Metadata files may be stored in a parallel directory tree rooted at the specified location, or all in the same directory. NcxCrawler calls repeatedly the processing method of Ncx to do the actual processing. Note: because of security restrictions, application will work on local netcdf files only Note: existing metadata files will be overwritten

Darwin Core

The Darwin Core is a metadata specification for information about the geographic occurrence of species and the existence of specimens in collections. It is used by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. It has a wiki site and a Task Group within Biodiversity Information Standards.

DBFMeta

DBFmeta is a software tool developed by USGS. It is designed to facilitate the documentation of data contained in DBF files. These data files are increasingly common because they are used to store attributes of geographic features in shapefiles used and produced by ESRI products. DBFmeta comes with mp, a parser for formal metadata, and is most effectively used with Tkme, an editor for formal metadata.

Ecological Metadata Language

XML application using modules to hold ecological metadata. The modules, once populated, contain information about datasets (including variables or "attributes", their definitions, units), citations, software, and protocols/methods. EML includes a coverage module, which can detail the geographic (bounding coordinates and a G-ring polygon definition), temporal (ISO 8601 Date and Time Specification) and standard taxonomic extents of the datasets.

FGDCMETA.AML

This is an AML tool developed by Illinois Natural Resources that extracts metadata from an ArcInfo file. It produces a template document with metadata elements and formatting suitable for verification with MP. Additional metadata information not included in the ArcInfo file will need to be added manually or with a formal metadata editor.
