Participants will hear a mix of plenaries, case studies, implementation experiences, practical applications, research projects, and advanced development activities. The main theme of the meeting is the value added by using several standards together in applications. Too often, people become adherents to a standard, and start to believe it can solve all the world's problems. The purpose of the conference is to show that the opposite is true. Using standards for the purpose for which they were designed and using multiple ones in appropriate ways is a more effective approach.

Now the longterm observation using submarine cables have drew world-wide attention, and some ambitious projects have initiated. We think it would be beneficial to hold another SSC workshop next year as many developments are going underway.
The SSC workshop will cover both scientific and technical topics. It would offer a good opportunity for both scientists and engineers to meet together and exchange information and deepen communication.

The modules, once populated, contain information about datasets (including variables or "attributes", their definitions, units), citations, software, and protocols/methods. EML includes a coverage module, which can detail the geographic (bounding coordinates and a G-ring polygon definition), temporal (ISO 8601 Date and Time Specification) and standard taxonomic extents of the datasets.
