"Metadata for Ocean Scientists" Tutorial at Ocean Sciences 2008

Event Description

MMI proposes to hold free metadata tutorials that are divided into 30-minute modules at the Ocean Sciences 2008 meeting. The modules will be: Introduction to Metadata; Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies, Taxonomies and Ontologies; Submitting Metadata to a Clearinghouse; and Metadata Best Practices. Two modules will be held during each lunch break on Tuesday and Wednesday. All four modules will be provided on Thursday evening.

Four MMI Metadata tutorial modules (presented originally at Ocean Sciences '08) are available at the MMI site at http://marinemetadata.org/oceansciences08. The tutorial modules are: Introduction to Metadata, Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies, Submitting to a Metadata Clearinghouse, and Metadata Best Practices. Three Workshop Types from NSF grant

Controlled Vocabulary Workshops: Describe where to find them, how to make new ones, and how to make them interoperable (e.g. publishing them in Web Ontology Language). Produce on-line materials from these workshops to make their content accessible to the community.

Protege Tutorial for MMI

Motivation

The MMI workshop in August 2005 will focus on developing mappings between existing marine metadata vocabularies, and making those mapped vocabularies available to users via web services. Most of the work of the meeting will be performed in small, carefully organized breakout teams, oriented around specific domains. To choose the domains, we created an ontology in Protege about "marine things". This tutorial describes how to open this ontology for review. (The same process will allow the user to open any ontology represented in the OWL format.)

Protégé-OWL Short Course

Hands-On course is taught by members of the Protégé team in facilities located on the Stanford campus. Enrollment will be limited to ensure optimal learning experiences.

Target Audience: The target audience members are beginner and intermediate users of Protégé-OWL.

Introduction to Metadata

In this module, we will help scientists (and their teams) learn to use metadata to document their data sets. We will use typical oceanographic data sets to demonstrate this process. We encourage all scientists and data technicians who want to understand basic metadata principles to attend this training.
