Architectural Framework and Operational Concept for Semantic Interoperability

Semantic interoperability is a needed capability to successfully exchange data in ocean science. The computer science and geo-informatics communities are introducing technical solutions, but there remains a challenge: the best approach toward semantic interoperability requires a designed framework, and operationally tested tools and infrastructure within that framework.

Geospatial Platform: Modernization Roadmap

The U.S. Department of the Interior and Federal Geographic Data Committee have collaborated on the release of Version 3.0 of "Modernization Roadmap for the Geospatial Platform." Released in August 2010, this document outlines a place-based approach for managing all geospatial data in the United States.

A particularly interesting element of this release is the wiki designed to discuss the platform, geoplatform.ideascale.com. The wiki supports open conversation on the nature and key features of the geospatial platform, and has attracted a number of sophisticated ideas and comments about the role of standards, tools, and other elements toward making a common, effective approach to geospatial data.

Moss Landing Marine Metadata Conference 2003

The purpose of the workshop is to identify and describe important metadata fields for the marine science community. The workshop will include a facilitator and participants from approximately 20 agencies, non-profits, for-profit corporations and academic institutions. The participant list will represent the unique combination of marine science, data management and GIS expertise. The event will focus on identifying the metadata fields and information necessary to describe certain types of marine data.
