"Metadata for Ocean Scientists" Tutorial at Ocean Sciences 2008

Event Description

MMI proposes to hold free metadata tutorials that are divided into 30-minute modules at the Ocean Sciences 2008 meeting. The modules will be: Introduction to Metadata; Introduction to Controlled Vocabularies, Taxonomies and Ontologies; Submitting Metadata to a Clearinghouse; and Metadata Best Practices. Two modules will be held during each lunch break on Tuesday and Wednesday. All four modules will be provided on Thursday evening.

Data from in-situ or remote sensing devices forms the basis for analyzing gradual processes, such as increasing drought, water shortages, or rising sea levels. The Sensor Web presents a paradigm in which the Internet is evolving into an active sensing macro instrument. Based on internationally adopted standards, the Sensor Web accomplishes the necessary requirements to ensure interoperability among its various components. Sensor Web software components and services work interactively in arbitrary application domains.

Global Coral Reef Environmental Observatory Network (CREON) Integration Meeting

CREON is a grass roots effort to form a community consisting of marine biologists, ecologists, computer scientists and application engineers, with common interests in understanding coral reef ecosystems. This is the first meeting of a two-meeting series to advance ocean systems semantic interoperability. (You may also wish to visit Part 2 of the Workshop Series.) In this meeting, we will do the planning and introductions to set the stage for the second, much larger meeting.

Background

Currently, there are many vocabularies in use by different data systems in the IOOS community. This cacophony of vocabularies inhibits interoperability between data systems, as well as the ability of IOOS to operate as a whole, integrated system.

Quality Assurance of Real-Time Ocean Data

Advances towards an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) have accelerated efforts to provide concurrent real time data quality information to a widely disparate user community. The first workshop for the Quality Assurance of Real-Time Ocean Data (QARTOD-I) for the coastal ocean observing community was hosted by the National Data Buoy Center from Dec 3 to Dec 5, 2003 at the Stennis Space Center.
