Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service

CADIS - The Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service - supports the Arctic Observing Network (AON). It will be a portal for data discovery, and provide near-real-time data delivery, a repository for data storage, and tools to manipulate data.

DMAC Implementation Plan

The DMAC Implementation Plan contains an integrated architecture for data management and communications in a national (U.S.), sustained ocean observing system. It is detailed, comprehensive, and mature, having been through many review cycles by many reviewers.

There is a lot of discussion of metadata in the DMAC Implementation Plan.

GALEON

GALEON (Gateway or Geo-interface for Air Land Earth Ocean NetCDF) is Unidata's OGC Interoperability Experiment.

The project will be both a formal OGC Interoperability Experiment related to the Web Coverage Service (WCS) interface specifications, and a set of software implementation experiments which, it is hoped, will go beyond the OGC membership into the world of OPeNDAP, LAS, THREDDS, NetCDF, etc.

The Group on Earth Observations is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems, or GEOSS.

GEO was launched in response to calls for action by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and by the G8 (Group of Eight) leading industrialized countries. These high-level meetings recognized that international collaboration is essential for exploiting the growing potential of Earth observations to support decision making in an increasingly complex and environmentally stressed world.

GEOSS Standards and Interoperability Forum (SIF)

GEOSS' Standards Interoperability Forum (SIF) is a committee of people who will support the interoperability requirements of GEOSS. per the GEOSS Standards Committee web site, it is intended "to facilitate the interchange of information, and make recommendations for standards and interoperability arrangements in GEOSS".

Hydrology Units Ontology

The International Polar Year Data and Information Service (IPYDIS) is a global partnership of data centers, archives, and networks working to ensure proper stewardship of IPY and related data. The International Polar Year is a massive international scientific programme focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic from March 2007 to March 2009.

IOOS DMAC Metadata Expert Team

The IOOS DMAC Steering Committee has formed a number of expert teams to provide feedback and guidance to the Steering Committee.

The Metadata Expert Team consists of roughly 15 people from many organizations and areas of expertise around the country. The team began meeting in telecons at least monthly in 2006, to establish its goals and organize the metadata-related activities needed for IOOS.

Ocean Observatories Initiative

The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is an NSF-funded initiative to bring transformative technologies and approaches to ocean science. It has 3 components, Global, Regional and Coastal, and Cyberinfrastructure. Its research-focused observatories will be networked and will contribute to the Integrated Ocean Observing System.

OceanSITES

OceanSITES is a project designed to make time series data from long-term ocean reference stations widely available. The sizable international group has been meeting for several years, and has preliminary documents describing data distribution practices and a standard format for netCDF files. Their NetCDF implementation is based on the Climate and Forecast (CF) convention.
