A Universal Ontology for Sensor Networks Data

A two layer prototype ontology that utilizes the IEEE Suggested Upper Merged Ontology (SUMO) as a root definition of general concepts and associations and two subontologies: the sensor data sub-ontology and the sensor hierarchy sub-ontology.

Ontology includes a Sensor Hierarchy Ontology that includes many of the same concepts as the MMI Device Ontology facets.

The ontology itself is not yet referenced here.

ACT Sensors List

ACT has a searchable database of sensors used in coastal and ocean research and observing. The database is a living database; it is continually updated as new test results are available and as more information is provided on each sensor/instrument.

Autonomous Mission Operations for Sensor Webs Ontology

Auxiliary Description of Instruments

In order to support defining metadata for instruments, GCMD is working on a content standard called AD-I, for Auxiliary Description of Instruments. This standard would serve to extend the DIF metadata currently accepted.

AD-I was introduced in draft form for Track 1 DIF work of the MMI Sensors Metadata Interoperability workshop.

CDI Sea Search Sensor and Platform Vocabularies

Sea Search was a European data management initiative (ended in 2005). It was funded to develop and operate a pan-european infrastructure for ocean and marine data management, with many corresponding goals listed on the site.

GCMD Sensors Vocabulary

The GCMD (Global Change Master Directory) keyword vocabularies are maintained by NASA, and are fairly extensive. These keywords are used to reference data submitted to the NASA repository.

ICES-SeaDataNet Platform Code

The ICES-SeaDataNet platform code contains a 2-character country code (from ICES/ISO country code) followed by a 2-character vessel code. The vessel identifier is only unique in that country. As of late 2007, there are over 6000 codes for platforms around the world.

MMI Device Ontology: A Community Development Project

Description

MMI has begun development of an ontology aimed at classifying sensor/device types, and possibly extending into more detailed sensor terminology. This project is being developed by interested members of the marine science and data community. See the project web site for details.

MMI Platforms Ontology

Description

In 2006 MMI worked with volunteers to start developing a sensors and platforms ontology, using many other reference vocabularies but starting with a blank ontology. The first ontology that resulted is a platform ontology. Click on the link to the OWL file in Sourceforge to find the downloadable OWL file with this ontology.

NODC Codes for Biological Observations

OceanSITES NetCDF Convention

OceanSITES is a project to assimilate measurements from long-term ocean reference stations measuring dozens of variables and monitoring the full depth of the ocean from air-sea interactions down to 5,000 meters. The OceanSITES data managment team has developed specific guidance for the implementation of netCDF conventions.

The OntoSensor ontology has been developed over a number of years by David Russomanno, of the University of Memphis.

It is built using the SUMO upper ontology.

As of 2008 it was not under active development.

SEACOOS Data Dictionary v2.0

The SEACOOS Data Dictionary v2.0 is an extention of the Climate and Forecast (CF) Standard Names Table (v1). This dictionary includes standard names that are coordinate-related, time_date names, atmospheric data, physical oceanographic, chemical oceanographic, electromagnetic radiation, ADCP, sensor-related, platform-related, and navigation not available or modified from CF Standard Names Table (v1) at the time of the project.

SensorML

A mature and active specification. The model is presented in several different forms (graphical, XML schema), with lots of documentation, and so should be useful to most developers.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has been developing a sophisticated data system for many of its research platforms for some time. The data system has always described its data sources and platforms fairly thoroughly, and used a device type categorization to group the devices.

W3C Semantic Sensor Network Incubator Working Group

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has a one-year incubator working group to consider development of ontologies and semantics for devices. The group's charter outlines two goals:

the development of ontologies for describing sensors, and
the extension of the Sensor Markup Language (SML), one of the four SWE languages, to support semantic annotations.

To participate in the W3C activity, W3C membership is required. See the charter for more information.
