GEON puts on a Cyberinfrastructure Summer Institute each year, which covers many cyberinfrastructure topics over the course of the year. The presentations (slides, webcasts, and often notes) are posted on the GEON web site.

Presentations of interest in 2005 (attended by an MMI member) include Semantic Web and Knowledge Representation and Ontology Based Resource Registration and Integration in GEON. Go to the link cited above and scroll down to Thursday sessions.

Getty Library Introduction to Metadata

This is an extremely well-written guide to the fundamentals of metadata. Although written in the context of a digital library, it perceptively illustrates the more complex aspects of the topic in a way that is entirely consistent with oceanographic and environmental uses.

GSDI Data Management Cookbook

The original document was written in 2000 as a collaboration of many data management professionals. It is written for a relative beginner in data management -- few assumptions are made about expertise.

The SDI Cookbook includes a lot of references to standards or approaches in place at the time (and most are still around). It may be a great starting point to the individual developer who needs to come up to speed on these topics.

ICES/IOC SGXML Final Report

A 20-page publication (pdf, 160kb) from the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) covers a range of fundamentals, from a definition of metadata and descriptions of the types of metadata, to practical advice on creating metadata and future directions. Good resources and online links listed at the end of the publication. General glossary included.

NOAA's CSC Metadata Workshop Materials

This online guide, available from NOAA's Coastal Services Center, includes information on metadata standards, getting started, metadata training, metadata tools, and metadata links. Some of the information is general and introductory, while some of the information pertains specifically to the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata of the Federal Geographic Data Committee.

NSDL Metadata Primer

NSGIC Metadata Primer

The National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC), with funding from the Federal Geographic Data Committee's Competetive Cooperative Agreements Program (CCAP), established The Metadata Primer as the second phase of their metadata research and education project. The Primer is a central location for metadata definitions and information for digital spatial data, and provides a "practical explanation of the metadata standard for state and local governments".

OCGC's Metadata Demystified

Metadata Demystified is a short guide provided by the Oregon Coast Geospatial Clearinghouse (the metadata backbone of the Oregon Coastal Atlas). Recommended by D. Wright and the Oregon Coastal Atlas team as a valuable resource, particularly when dealing with FGDC metadata.

Scholarly Citation of Data

This paper proposes an approach to citing quantitative data, outlining each of the proposed fields and the issues they address. It appears to be reasonably comprehensive, and may be a suitable standard, at least in outline.

Stanford Ontology Creation Guide

Protege is one of the most popular tools to create and edit ontologies. Their creators at Stanford University published a tutorial with examples from the wine domain. In 25 pages they explain what is an ontology and a step by step methodology to guide an ontology developer. It has been translated to French and Russian and its available as PDF and HTML. At the end you will learn what is a class, and individual, and how properties relate other individuals. You will also gain some knowledge about wines.

UNESCO IOC Ocean Teacher

Ocean Teacher is a guidebook provided by UNESCO/IOC to guide the creation of oceanographic data systems. It assumes no prior knowledge of oceanography or data management, its target audience being individuals who may not have been exposed to one or the other (or either) disciplines.

Comments

The content is generally well-written and accurate, and is strikingly comprehensive.

This document addresses how URI space is partitioned and the relationship between URIs, URLs, and URNs; describes how URI schemes and URN namespace ids are registered; ists some additional unresolved issues not considered by this paper; and presents recommendations.

Note: this document is fairly old but contains some recommendations that have not been overturned, as far as I can see.
