Animal Behavior Ontology

This web site contains information concerning development of an ontology for animal behaviors. The ontology contains detailed descriptions of animal behaviors, most are applicable to terrestrial animals but many of these behaviors can be carried over to the marine environment (mating, predation, care of young, etc).

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA)

ASFA is an abstracting and indexing service covering the world's literature on the science, technology, management, and conservation of marine, brackish water, and freshwater resources and environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects.

As part of their service, ASFA has developed an extensive thesaurus of keywords. The ASFA thesaurus covers a wide area of the biological oceanographic domain. The glossary is more restricted in scope.

BODC Parameter Ontology Project

The BODC Parameter Discovery Vocabulary (PDV) is a controlled list of over 300 terms for identifying categories of oceanographic metadata. This is currently mapped to the 18,000+ term BODC Parameter Usage Vocabulary, an internationally renowned dictionary for describing data values.

CIMA Ontology

CIMA is aimed at "Grid enabling" instruments as real-time data sources to improve accessibility of instruments and to facilitate their integration into the Grid. They are developing semantic metadata (in OWL/RDF) using a web-based tool, so that the semantic metadata can be used to drive the WSDL/SOAP middleware.

DOLCE ROCKS: Integrating Foundational and Geoscience Ontologies

From the abstract: "This work investigates the alignment of DOLCE foundational ontology with concepts from two geoscience knowledge representations, GeoSciML and SWEET. The geoscience concepts are partially mapped to each other and to those in the foundational ontology, via the subclass and other relations, resulting in an integrated OWL-based ontology called DOLCE ROCKS."

Earth System Grid Ontology

The ESG ontology is written in OWL-DL and was primarily developed for adding metadata to datasets found in the Earth System Grid (ESG) portal. It is easiest to view it with Protege 3.0. It is a mixed bag of concepts and includes housekeeping information as well as earth science specific information. It has been checked for consistency and (ontology-related) errors.

ITSC Ontologies

The Information Technology and Systems Center (ITSC), at University of Alabama in Huntsville, is building ontologies for specialized domains and software tools that use a number of ontologies. The ITSC is a partner in the NSF information technology research project LEAD (Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery). They created an ontology that provides semantic metadata for data sets and serves as an educational service, knowledge resource and community reference.

MMI Platforms Ontology

Description

In 2006 MMI worked with volunteers to start developing a sensors and platforms ontology, using many other reference vocabularies but starting with a blank ontology. The first ontology that resulted is a platform ontology. Click on the link to the OWL file in Sourceforge to find the downloadable OWL file with this ontology.

MMI Sensors Ontology: A Community Development Project

Description

MMI has begun development of an ontology aimed at classifying sensor/device types, and possibly extending into more detailed sensor terminology. This project is being developed by interested members of the marine science and data community. See the project web site for details.

MMI Workshop Sensors Ontology

This outline was developed by participants in the MMI Advancing Domain Vocabularies workshop in 2005. It is a top-level outline of sensor types, organized by measurement technique. Although it never moved beyond the preliminary stage, it is moderately comprehensive.

OBO: Open Biological Ontologies

From the site: "This site contains ontologies and points to some other efforts within the community. Ideally we see a range of ontologies being designed for biological domains. Some of these will be generic and apply across all organisms and others will be more restricted in scope, for example to specific taxonomic groups."

The site is not simply a compendium of ontologies. It has inclusion criteria which are fairly strict, in order to facilitate interoperation of the multiple ontologies listed.

OBOE: Extensible Observation Ontology
