Access: The MMI Visibility System

Guiding Principal

The MMI project is a community collaboration. As such, content on the site should be available to as wide an audience as possible. In general, content is visible to members.

Visibility Rules

By default, content on the site will be visible to anyone, including individuals who are not logged in to the site.

Visibility of content that is being prepared and/or reviewed is determined by the workflow state. While adding content, it is recommended the access in the workflow is set to "Visible to Members".

Adding / Editing Content Form—The Detailed Explanation

There are a variety of types of content that can be added to the MMI site, including References, Opportunities, Events, and Pages. Each of these includes common elements, combined with elements unique to each type of content. To find explanation of the unique elements for each content type, see the Details links below.

Form elements that are flagged with a * in the form are required. You will not be able to submit the content until these elements are completed.

Content is added to the MMI site using a guided web-form, which collects information used to publish and organize site content. Once content is contributed to the site, it undergoes a review, and is then formally published.

Members are able to add and edit published content.
Guests are able to add content.

Am I a member of any of the MMI "Committees and Groups"?

As with many webpages, there are variety of ways to determine in which groups you are a member. The quickest method is to use the "My Teams" link directly below your username.

You can also determine your membership by going to Community: Committees and Groups, and clicking the "My Groups" tab.

Assigning Aliases and Redirects

Drupal assigns exactly one numeric node-id to each piece of content on the site. This ID can always be used to access content. For example, the node ID of this page is 6370. Users can always access this page using the following URL: http://marinemetadata.org/node/6370 .

However, this URL is not graceful or memorable, and it does not provide any information about the content. To achieve these goals, the MMI project makes use of Aliases and Redirects.

As the work of a team progresses, the team will create a variety of pages. Some of these pages will contribute content for all visitors to the MMI site (reference pages, guidance documents, and so on). Other content will be primarily geared toward the work of the team (agendas, monthly reports, presentations, and the like).

Monthly reports for team activities are created as Team Content. The target audience is a high-level technical reviewer, who is looking for progress in the appropriate strategic directions. There is a specific syntax to be used in some of the fields, so the automated report generation process can proceed as usual.

Describing the Team

The MMI website has been designed to facilitate team productivity by creating collaborative communities. Each team is assigned a section of the site, which can be used for collaboration, communication within the team, and produce various outcomes. The team is created electronically by a site administrator, but as the team lead, you are encouraged to customize "your space."

So, now what?

The MMI site supports the activities of your group in a variety of ways. Most of this functionality is centered on the "group" section of the site. There are five main activities designed specifically for you as a group lead:

The right hand side normally contains general MMI site content (Events, News, Feature Stories, Who's Online), but on pages that are assigned to group, the right hand side is reserved for group navigation and activities.

Navigation

The blue navigation bar to the left of the page provides access to content, based on the established scheme. For some of these items, such as "Community and Groups", you can hover over the button to see a submenu.

In addition to the blue navigation bar, you also see content-specific menus on the right side of the screen. By default, you will see events, news, and a feature story.

How do URLs work on the MMI site?

URLs are assigned in the content entry page, using the shortname and URL parent fields. For more information about URL conventions in use on the MMI site, see the link below.

In general, the shortname and URL parent should be used to generate the alias. In rare cases, members might need to assign "special" URLs. This should be done carefully, and only as prescribed by MMI URL conventions and procedures.
