Announcing: MMI Ontology Registry prototype

New Ontology Registry under Development

MMI and SURA (Southeastern Universities Research Association) announce the development of a prototype Ontology Registry and Repository for Marine and Environmental Science ontologies.

The registry, which will store ontologies, ontology mappings, and metadata associated with those artifacts, is intended to be available for general scientific use by the end of 2008.

Biodiversity Knowledge Organization Systems

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) has commissioned a white paper to advise it on its future directions for Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), a rubric that includes the creation, use, and management of such resources as controlled vocabularies, thesauri, gazetteers, and ontologies. Before a final draft is produced, GBIF invites an initial public review of the first draft. Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2009

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is coordinating the Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2009. The goal of this year's Capitol Hill Ocean Week is to highlight the inextricable link between the ocean and the economy, and to suggest tangible ways sound ocean policies might impact improvements in our economy.

Oceans Week 2009 is sponsored by a mix of public and private sponsors. The event takes place June 9- 11, 2009. The three-day event is focused on informing the Congressional Delegation on ocean issues and their effects on our nation's economy.

CeNCOOS-CF Mapping File in OWL

This is the .owl mapping file of the CeNCOOS-CICORE vocabulary to the CF ontology. The file was developed using MMI's VINE mapping tool.

Team members are requested to review the .owl file for mapping accuracies.

The file below is the CeNCOOS-CICORE Vocabulary for water quality and atmospheric parameters in the Resource Description Framework (RDF). This file was created using MMI's Voc2RDF web service. The terms in this file can be mapped to terms in other ontologies, such as CF, using MMI's Vocabulary Integration Environment (VINE).

CenSeam Metadata Specification Mentioned in SemWeb

In response to an ontology development effort that requested image metadata ideas, we mentioned the CenSeam Image Metadata Specification to the SemWeb mail list of the W3C (semantic-web@w3.org). The Creative Commons has proposed a markup specification for images using RDFa, and is interested in improving it. Several other interesting image metadata ontologies were also referenced during that discussion (pointers are below).

The Information & Intelligent Systems (IIS) research community is very fortunate this year, as the US National Science Foundation and the Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) Directorate have several IIS-relevant funding opportunities (calls for proposals). This also means that we need to find many panelists and reviewers that would be able and willing to review these proposals.

This is an early prototype of a Standards Selection Tool.

There are two documents attached:

Image, which presents early thoughts on the 7-dimensions
Excel Document, which is the tool to be used in the standard selection.
Ted Haberman's original Standards Selection Tool (Excel document)

These will *not* be the final versions, or the final format. They are current, as of January 24, 2008.

There weren't too many things updated in this release, but is a major milestone as we're now back on track with fixes and updates in the Drupal core, and updating in the future will be relatively painless.

The Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI) project was featured prominently in two presentations at the recent AAG meeting. Dawn Wright presented information on Trans-Atlantic partnerships, and participated in a panel on Distributed Geospatial Information Processing (see below for details). By providing tools and expertise, MMI facilitates data sharing, which can lead to scientifically sound and innovative projects. One such example is the Oregon Coastal Atlas.
