NODC Taxonomic Codes
The National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) 12-digit code numbers contained information about taxonomy through the use of 2-digit couplets to represent one or more levels of taxonomic hierarchy.
The National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) taxonomic code was transferred to ITIS in 1996 for management (see ITIS Taxonomic Database). NODC taxonomic codes are no longer being assigned. ITIS now assigns unique taxonomic serial numbers (TSNs) for each species. The NODC code used 12-digit numbers that coded taxonomic relationships through the use of 2-digit couplets.
