The Marine Visioning Tool, with a glossary and controlled vocabulary of sorts, has been developed so that the user may achieve a greater understanding of the complex marine landscape and the factors that shape it.

This landscape has been divided into the following seven major categories: Time Scales, Fluids, Physical, Plankton, Benthos, Nekton, and Human. Within each of these categories are between two and five subjects. This is shown in flowchart form. The tool has been designed to allow the user to learn about a category or subject and to read about the interconnectedness of subjects by navigating the flowchart. This is also useful when trying to understand terms that may be found in metadata.
