ISO Technical Committee 211 on Geographic information and Geomatics
Description
The Technical Committee 211 of ISO aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location relative to the Earth.
These standards may specify, for geographic information, methods, tools and services for data management (including definition and description), acquiring, processing, analyzing, accessing, presenting and transferring such data in digital/electronic form between different users, systems and locations.
Some 40 individual projects are currently defined. These include standards on:
- Metadata (ISO 19115)
- A Domain Reference Model (data/metadata framework) and Architecture Reference Model (services) for interoperability (ISO 19101)
- Conceptual models for geometric (ISO 19107) and temporal (ISO 19108) schema, coordinate reference systems (ISO 19111), gridded data (ISO 19123), etc
- A canonical XML encoding of various conceptual models, the Geography Markup Language (GML, ISO 19136)
- Web Map Service interface for web-enabled geographic data visualisation (ISO 19128)
- A general framework for data interoperability involving formal data models/feature types (ISO 19103, 19109), feature type catalogues (ISO 19110), and encodings (ISO 19118)
- many others...
These standards are under active development and at various stages of maturity.
ISO is a well-established standards body with rigorous formal procedures.
ISO standards are not freely available.
