ISO/IEC 11179 - A standard for metadata registries

This standard addresses the semantics and representation of data, and the registration of descriptions of that data. The standard has strong international backing and is freely available.

ISO/IEC 11179 promotes the following:

  1. Standard description of data
  2. Common understanding of data across organizational elements and between organizations
  3. Re-use and standardization of data over time, space, and applications
  4. Harmonization and standardization of data within an organization and across organizations
  5. Management of the components of data
  6. Re-use of the components of data
