Geonames
An open source geographical database with support for Semantic Web services
Description:
Geonames is a gazeeteer. It provides more than 6.5 million features. Each feature has a unique identifier, and other characteristics, such as name, location, relations among other features, links to wikipedia etc.. It has friendly web services via REST, JSON, RSS, Semantic Web, etc.Geonames uses Semantic Web (ontologies) technology to describe and link the different features, and provides RDF services, meaning that you can get and RDF description for each feature.
Example: http://www.geonames.org/4351177/about.rdf returns an RDF for the Chesapeake Bay
It is socially open. Meaning that anyone could change information about the feature (location, name, etc..) except the ID which remains the same.
