GEMET - GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus

Multilingual thesaurus that aims to define a core terminology for the environmental domain.

GEMET thesaurus

GEMET provides a user friendly parameter discovery interface for the European Environment Information and Observation Network (EIONET). It makes use of SKOS, the Simple Knowledge Organisation System and also the metadata registries standard, ISO 11179.

The first point of entry is a list of environmental themes. This is followed by further categoriastion and finally a concept definition with links to broader than/narrower than and related terms and also a list of multilingual alternative names.

The backbone of this thesaurus is a SKOS ontology which sets out the relationships between all terms in an RDF structured file

There is also a section for data dictionaries. If you follow one of the links within the "released data definitions" box, listings are provided which are compliant with ISO 11179. Clicking on the question marks by the field labels gives the ISO 11179 definition for that particular field label where applicable.

GEMET also exposes its information viaweb services.
