Catalog Services for the Web (CSW) is an OGC specification that defines common interfaces to discover, browse, and query metadata about data, services, and other potential resources.

CSW defines interfaces such as: describeRecord. The return of CSW services follows a metadata content standard format (e.g. Dublin Core, FGDC or ISO). When returning each of these, the CSW return conforms to a specific schema. So, if it returns ISO metadata, the CSW is called CSW / ISO 19115 profile.
