FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata
Description
CSDGM is applicable to any geospatial data. Its goal is to define the information required by a prospective user to determine the availability of a set of geospatial data, the fitness the set of geospatial data for an intended use, and the means of accessing the set of geospatial data, and to enable successful transfer. It was developed in response to Presidential Executive Order 12906, "Coordinating Geographic Data Acquisition and Access: The National Spatial Data Infrastructure".
Type
Content Standard
Stage of Maturity
Existing - the item is available for public use, has been released or widely adopted, and is sponsored or maintained
Notes: The current version, version 2.0, was produced in 1998.
Producer
the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), a US federal interagency committee
Maintainer
CSDGM is maintained by FGDC
Users
Nation Use - adopted by a country or sovereign state, or principal agency thereof
Notes: CSDGM is required of all federal agencies and of projects/programs funded through US federal funds, and so it is quite widely used.
Support
Email, telephone and physical mail contacts for questions are listed on the FGDC website; the FGDC page also has links to training sessions and additional online guidance documents.
Comments
Several profiles and extensions exist for CSDGM that are relevant to marine data: the shoreline profile, the biological data profile, and the remote sensing extension
Examples
- FGDC Metadata describing the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) website
- FGDC Metadata a dataset of hydrology and water quality in the Everglades, presented as part of the SOFIA site
- FGDC Metadata describing the NOAA collection of 30 meter Digital Elevation Model data of estuarine Bathymetry
- FGDC description of Sea Surface Temperature data from MOOS Upper-Water-Column Science Experiment (MUSE) from NOAA-14 AVHRR Satellite
- FGDC metadata on CTD , Optical backscatter, Fluorescence, Bioluminescence data from MBARI MUSE AUV Data
Tools
FGDC maintains a list of tools for creating and working with CSDGM metadata
