BODC Parameter Ontology Project

The British Oceanographic Data Centre is creating an ontology to link the BODC Parameter Discovery Vocabulary, the CF Standard Names and the GCMD Science Keywords

The BODC Parameter Discovery Vocabulary (PDV) is a controlled list of over 300 terms for identifying categories of oceanographic metadata. This is currently mapped to the 18,000+ term BODC Parameter Usage Vocabulary, an internationally renowned dictionary for describing data values.

Creating an ontology to link the BODC PDV to the GCMD Science Keywords and the CF Standard Names will therefore open up a significant metadata resource to the oceanographic community.

Lists will be converted to OWL format using Voc2OWL and mapped using VINE.

A Term Server Web Service is in the pipeline to distribute the subsequent ontology via the internet. Information concerning this will be posted on BODC 's Web Service pages.
