CICORE Vocabulary Development

The DIGARCH interoperability framework is the basis for a federated, multi-institutional data network for scalable digital archiving. It supports a high degree of platform independence and data and metadata interoperability each of which is an essential component of long-term data interoperability.

DIVE Team

The DIVE team is requesting community assistance to conduct focused research on metadata technologies for ocean science. Each focused team of scientists, technologists and data managers would work to comprehensively review and explain existing capabilities and best practices, comparing existing solutions for the community.

Environmental Observatories

Background

Establishment of an Environmental Observing System requires the allotment of a substantial amount of funds for capital investment and subsequent resources for operations and maintenance of the system, including provisions for the research community to conduct research within the observatories. The number of Environmental Observatories currently under consideration, as well as the level of funds required, makes it very difficult for NSF to support the initiatives out of the Research and Related Activities (R&RA) budget.

Gulf of Maine Ocean Data Partnership

The Gulf of Maine Ocean Data Partnership was created to promote and coordinate the sharing, linking, electronic dissemination, and use of data on the Gulf of Maine region. This team site contains information about vocabularies of interest to the partnership. The partnership is monitoring existing efforts to develop crosswalks between disparate vocabularies and will develop crosswalks only as a last resort. Image Metadata Specification for CenSeam

The CenSeam Image Metadata Project intends to standardize the metadata captured for still images by members of The Global Census of Marine Life on Seamounts (CenSeam) working group, with the possibility of being used in the larger marine science community through projects like The Census of Marine Life (CoML) and Marine Metadata Interoperability (MMI).

The IOOS Observation Registry is a database that defines the operational status and distribution of in situ ocean observation activity among the non federal participants in IOOS. Its primary purpose is to support strategic planning for resource allocation and to facilitate the discovery and utilization of observation data. Its design is based on a distributed network of nodes across the country that expose their resources to the public through web services. Each node is regularly polled for its operational status and compiled into a national view.

ISWG Standards Taxonomy

The IEEE Committee on Earth Observations (ICEO) Standards Working Group, or ISWG -- see this GEOSS web page for more information -- has attempted to categorize the types of standards used in earth observations. The first application for this information will be in constructing user interfaces to access or specify the standards used for data and information components.

The Water Temperature metadata pilot project is aiming at providing an international standardization framework for collecting SST and water temperature profile instrumental metadata from a number of marine observational systems, including drifting and moored buoys, observing ships, sea level stations, sub-surface profiling floats, ocean reference stations, and ODAS.

In August 2005 the Marine Metadata Initiative (MMI) held a workshop to coordinate the mapping of science domain vocabularies. The sensor team at the workshop identified that there was not an existing comprehensive ontology for sensors used by the marine science community, and began working on such an effort by starting with science observing platforms.

Motivation

A quick search on Metadata Standards reveals thousands of web hits. Some of these represent real standards that are important for marine metadata interoperability. Unfortunately, some do not. How is a metadata manager to evaluate these standards, and decide upon standards suitable for implementation?

MMI has a Technical Advisory Panel consisting of leading technical members of the marine science data management, environmental science data management, and semantic interoperability communities. The Technical Advisory Panel reviews MMI products, services, and directions to ensure maximum collaborative effect is achieved. This team is asked to identify opportunities for collaboration with other marine data management efforts, to provide MMI with information about those activities, and to identify issues with MMI's activities and direction.

The MMI Workshops Team conducts overall planning for MMI workshops and provides oversight (and, in some cases, assistance) to individual workshop planning, implementation and follow-up. The team primarily ensures that different types of MMI workshops (e.g., controlled vocabulary workshops, small science workshops illustrating the application of MMI guidance to create effective interoperability between research projects) are conducted according to MMI's principles and practices.
