Suggested Modules for Vocabulary Mapping Workshop

Four-Module Approach to a Vocabulary Mapping Workshop

For those interested in a shorter version of the approach outlined in the template, this page includes four suggested modules for a vocabulary mapping workshop. Most of the work can be done virtually (using email and the workshop website), with the exception of the start of the mapping process. The mapping process should be initiated at a meeting to ensure that the process works for the group and that the interpersonal relationships facilitating the work are established.

  1. Establish the workshop website, identify the domain(s) of interest, gather vocabularies, harmonize vocabularies (into the Web Ontology Language, OWL, or the Resource Description Framework, using MMI's Voc2OWL/Voc2RDF tool) as a first virtual module. This work may take a few days to a few weeks.
  2. Identify team members for each domain, assign roles, and conduct all pre-workshop training virtually (using email and the workshop website) as a second module. The training would include the workshop goals, approach, roles, and tools (with some attention to how the vocabularies are functioning). All of this work may take a few weeks (particularly identifying and contacting the prospective domain team members). The training itself could occur over a couple of hours.
  3. Convene to map (could map only a subset of terms in the chosen domain(s) ) and publish results to the workshop website and MMI as a third module. One to two days.
  4. Use the relationships developed at the workshop to complete the mapping work, apply the mapping work to enhance interoperability, publish workshop report, and/or other papers/presentations, virtually, as a fourth module.

Please refer to the Table of Contents for the template/how to materials for each of the suggested modules.
