WT002 - WHOI-MMI Web Site transition plan

This document includes the list of tasks to be accomplished before the end of 2007

Overview

The overall goal is to create the website with core functionality for December 2007 AGU. This will be accomplished by the WHOI Web Team working with a group of MMI members to accomplish the tasks listed below. A secondary goal of this effort is to familiarize key MMI staff members and contributors with the techniques and procedures for keeping a Drupal site up and running smoothly.

September 2007 - Deliverable: site with 4 content areas populated

  • Prepare for technical team tour of site before final plone/drupal decision
    • Set dates - accomodate all who are interested - DONE
    • Develop tour plan to show features & issues - DONE
  • Continue populating and improving navigation on the site
    • Cleanup and correct themes/menus etc.
      • search and logout always available (Andy) - DONE
      • implement Plone clone site for testing (Jeff) - DONE
      • refine procedure for migrating private files (Jeff) - in progress
      • build Guides Team area (Andy) - DONE
    • Address functionality questions in the website table and project memorandum (Andy/Nan) - in progress
    • Prepare summary description of drupal resource taxonomy needs (Nan) - DONE
    • Prepare help text for Adding Content (Andy) - DONE
    • Start to research menus driven by hierarchical vocabularies for groups(Jeff)(low priority)
    • Complete list of directories on Plone site with appropriate default tags for drupal site (Nan/Andy) - in progress

October 2007 - Milestones: Tech Team Meeting and Decision

  • Further develop resource taxonomy (Techteam)
    • Include taxonomic terms for unclassified docs as well as docs likely to be retired
  • Develop an MMI committee "organic groups" menu taxonomy (Techteam)
  • Place or create "folder pages" (default top page for "folders" (Jeff/Andy/Nan)
  • Automated snapshot (W-Get) of plone contents transferred to drupal site (Jeff)
  • Tag content (import-html) appropriately using list of directories on the drupal site, add navigation(Jeff)
    • also match plone urls to drupal urls
  • Continue testing of potential guides-related modules (feedback, navigation) (Kyle/Nan/Andy)
  • Style/skin the events calendar (Katherine)

November 2007 - Milestones: pre-AGU review and cleanup

  • Cleanup and organize content migrated by Jeff (Nan/Andy)
  • Test, modify calendar function (Andy)
  • Present and decide on views/themes (TechTeam)
  • Cleanup menus/views/themes so work well with new content (All)
  • Implement Tools Team area (Andy/Caryn)
  • Assign site-architect role to key staff
    • John, Luis, others?

December 2007 - Deliverable: Drupal site

  • Deliver site with core content and functionality for AGU (Dec 10-14) and solicit comments
    • Drupal site taxonomy will be fully developed and implemented for all docs
    • Update-able MMI Resources will be live on site
    • Most (nearly all) published, public pages from plone site available to anonymous users
      • tagging may still be in progress
      • authorship for all docs will be transferred (and thus search-able)
    • MMI Calendar will be published and being updated by MMI members
  • Guides Organic Group will be implemented allowing active Guides Team to develop content
  • New Tools "DIVE" Team will be implemented as an Organic Group and able to do the following:
    • join MMI via the drupal site
      • plone site membership will be provided if necessary
    • create and store agendas and minutes
    • modify MMI resources
    • join the team (this will be possible via web browsers at AGU)
    • provide reviews and descriptions of tools
  • NOTE: Some of the existing teams may be using the current plone site for some functions for some period of time after the new site goes public
