The British Oceanographic Data Centre launched a new version of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) DataGrid Vocabulary Server

NERC DataGrid Vocabulary Server, Version 1.1 Released

A key factor in interoperability is the function of multiple systems to interpret metadata values, in the context of distributed sets of terminology. A vocabulary is a managed list of acceptable values, which can be used by a human or computer system to interpret (and translate, if necessary) terminology. The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) maintains a NERC DataGrid provides access to vocabularies in a variety of disciplines of relevance to the marine metadata community.

Vocabularies facilitate data discovery, delivery, and use. The NERC DataGrid also enables distributed systems to translate individual terminology into the accepted values within the vocabulary.

NERC DataGrid serves the vocabulary with the following information:

  • Key - Computer Readable Unique Identifier
  • Term - Human Readable Unique Identifier (i.e. British Oceanographic Data Centre)
  • Abbreviation - Human Readable Condensed Identfier (i.e. BODC)
  • Definition - Human Readable Interpretation of Term (i.e. a national facility for preserving and distributing marine data)
