Workshop Recommendations, Planned Activities on Sensor Interoperability
Reports from two separate workshops highlight the promise and practical opportunities for metadata and sensor interoperability, while upcoming activities are pursuing this topic further.
Work to Date
There are tremendous possibilities for the development of interoperable systems - both for data acquisition and metadata generation/use. These opportunities were explored at two workshops in October, 2006. Significant overlap between sensor and metadata interoperability were evident in the recommendations for each report.
International Ocean Systems recently published an article that focused on these two reports, their overlap, and the activities still underway. To read more, please see Two new reports recommend far-reaching strategies for getting oceanographic instruments to work together
The first workshop, 'Enabling Sensor Interoperability' (hosted by ACT and GoMOOS), focused on how to get individual sensors to work together efficiently in large systems such as oceanographic observing networks. The second workshop, entitled 'Sensor Metadata Interoperability', (sponsored by MMI) focused on methods for describing oceanographic sensors and the data they produce.
Workshop reports for both are available online:

Planning for the Future
The MMI web site includes an outline of strategic activities needed to support sensor interoperability. Based in part on the reports above, and updated regularly with new information from the community, this page provides a coordination point for community activities on this topic.
Various coming event are addressing sensor interoperability:
