Site Architecture

Content Types, Navigation, and URLs - Understanding how the site really works

This page describes the way content types, pathauto, and other site internals are used to produce a navigable site with reasonable URLs.

When you add content to the MMI site, there are several behind-the-scenes actions which take place to help keep everything organized and structured. In addition, we've established some conventions that we ask users to follow, many of which will be automated in the future. This was done to keep things as consistent as possible but also give users flexibility to organize certain content types as they might see fit.

Background Reading

The following areas provide background information that you will need to understand before reading further in this section. After you are familiar with the information below, you'll be ready to learn about URLs and the pathauto mechanism.

Content Organization Strategies

There are several methods by which content is organized and accessible on the MMI site. Most methods involve either Teams or Keywords.

  • Team Organization
    • Content can be created within teams which you belong to. This helps keep related content easily accessible by those who are working on similar projects.
    • Further, using the Group Content Filing System, each team has several keywords to work with that allows them to divide their content by category. Content intended for a group can be assigned with a keyword, Document for example, and then when visiting a team page, all pieces of content with the keyword Document can be found by clicking the Document link at the top right of the page.
  • Keyword Organization
    • Multiple keywords can be assigned to individual pieces of content, making them accessible via search and browsing.
    • Keywords are organized hierarchically.

URL Naming Conventions

URLs on the MMI site follow an established convention, and are assigned automagically. For more information, see the URL Conventions page.
