Introduction to Agenda: Overall Structure of Workshop
Two different tracks will take place during this workshop. All participants will meet for the plenary presentations, including certain breakout reports.
- Track 1: Evaluating Sensor Metadata Standards
This track will focus on selecting and applying standards for sensor-related metadata to specific use cases. Content standards, and to some extent controlled vocabularies, will be applied to real-world problems, and evaluated in that context. Participants will work with content standards and vocabularies with which they are familiar, using them to complete metadata descriptions, and will then evaluate the utility of the results. Participants in this track will need a high degree of sophistication with data systems, and some knowledge of the content standard they select. more... - Track 2: Sensor Metadata Interoperability Training
This track will provide technical and hands-on training on sensor-related metadata practices. This track will include an overview of the metadata activities in an end to end data system, and present state of the practice metadata solutions to common data management scenarios. Track 2 will also give participants a hands-on opportunity to work with sensor metadata in a real-world application. more...
Interactions
The two tracks interact at several points during the workshop. The challenges and insights from Track 1 groups will be presented simultaneously to the other groups and the Track 2 participants, to enable them to appreciate current technologies in this field. At the same time, Track 2 participants will inform the Track 1 discussion, both by submitting questions, and by offering comments toward the evaluations that occur in the plenary discussion. Track 2 participants will also report on the lessons learned from the exercises they perform, which may also inform the plenary discussions.
Day 0: Wednesday, October 18, 2006
| 1830: GoMOOS RECEPTION |
- GoMOOS Reception at GoMOOS
The Gulf of Maine Ocean Observing System will host a reception for workshop participants at their offices on 390 Commercial St.
The reception will take place from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and will include a brief presentation on GoMOOS from its Director, Philip Bogden.
Day 1: Thursday, October 19, 2006

- Welcome/Logistics/Agenda
- Focus of Workshop: Assessing Standards and Identifying Issues
- Keynote Presentation: The IOOS DMAC Metadata Expert Team: Challenges and Status
Anne Ball, Co-Chair, IOOS DMAC Metadata Expert Team - Keynote Presentation: Environmental Observatories: ORION Cyberinfrastructure Sensors & Metadata
Alan Chave, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
- Detailed review of task:
- Describe two sensors for the provided use cases.
- Use the assigned content standard as faithfully as possible.
- Attempt to complete the work to a usable standard (e.g., the description can be validated).
- Schedule: Assignment due at beginning of Day 2.
- Primary Goals:
- See how well the standard works.
- Identify strengths and weakness of the standard.
- Prepare a presentation of the results.
- Secondary Goals are to identify, use, and similarly analyze applicable vocabularies, and to identify other issues
