Ocean Observing Systems Interoperability Planning Workshop
August 26, 2008
August 28, 2008
Sponsored by MMI, GCOOS, and Q2O, this workshop targets improved semantic interoperability for ocean observing systems.

This is the first meeting of a two-meeting series to advance ocean systems semantic interoperability. (You may also wish to visit Part 2 of the Workshop Series.) In this meeting, we will do the planning and introductions to set the stage for the second, much larger meeting.

Background

Currently, there are many vocabularies in use by different data systems in the IOOS community. This cacophony of vocabularies inhibits interoperability between data systems, as well as the ability of IOOS to operate as a whole, integrated system.

August 12, 2008
August 15, 2008
Explore the application of GIS in conservational projects - using metadata to drive mapping and data presentation

Conference theme: Our Changing World

GIS tools provide a mechanism to access, analyze and display distributed data sets. Much of the functionality built into GIS programs, like ESRI tools, are dependant on accurate and interoperable metadata. In the GIS world, geospatial metadata is particularly important.

To see more about accessing and using data sets using metadata, see the pre-conference workshops:

GeoWeb 2008
July 21, 2008
July 25, 2008
This year's theme: “Infrastructure: Local to Global"

We are all lobbying for an operational and global spatial data infrastructure. The term “GeoWeb” refers to an immediate solution to redundant data, expensive data integration, and expensive or inefficient data distribution capabilities. More importantly, the “GeoWeb” unlocks a world of new technologies, markets and improved decision-making. This is a pivotal technological shift that will not only change the industry however the way we use geospatial information in our everyday lives.

June 18, 2008
Interdisciplinary workshop to explore the issues associated with provenance.

Provenance (also referred to as
audit trail, lineage, and pedigree) captures information about the
steps used to generate a given data product. Such information provides
important documentation that is key to preserve data, to determine the
data's quality and authorship, to understand, reproduce, as well as
validate results.

International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS)
June 11, 2008
June 14, 2008
Distributed computing issues in large-scale networked sensor systems (including algorithms, applications, and systematic design techniques and tools).

Distributed sensor systems have become a highly active research area due to their potential for providing diverse new capabilities. Such systems allow intelligent dense monitoring of physical environments, which makes them immensely useful for data collection and analysis. The focus of the conference is on distributed computing issues in large-scale networked sensor systems (including algorithms, applications, and systematic design techniques and tools), but networking-related contributions that support high level abstractions are also welcome.
