COMPASS workshop to explore the development of an ontology of marine capture devices

The COMPASS (Coastal Marine Perception Application for Scientific Scholarship) project is exploring the development of an ontologically-driven knowledge infrastructure. As an initial step in this process, COMPASS will develop an ontology for the marine domain of instruments (measurement devices).

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • To collect knowledge that will form the basis of a domain ontology for instruments (data capture devices) in coastal and marine research
  • To collect knowledge of associated parameters (e.g. nitrate concentration, depth, SST) in coastal and marine research as the basis for an ontology of geographic features that result from data capture (e.g. bathymetry)
  • To identify use case(s) that illustrate the potential value of a knowledge infrastructure for coastal and marine research utilising the instrument and parameter ontologies
