Discussion and Issues

First draft of the upper levels of the site map with main categories. These are shown in the order in which they will appear, either in LHS or horizontal navigation bar, TBD when the design work is begun.
  1. About MMI
  2. MMI Community
  3. Guides
  4. Metadata Conventions (was Metadata Standards)
  5. Technical Tools
  6. Projects

Home Page Features includes some items that will be on every page (login/join).

Discussion of "vocabularies and standards" - conventions is a better term, more widely accepted. The terms “content standards” and “vocabularies” are known to be important (evidenced by site survey and site statistics) but might not need to be in top level nav. Mouse-overs will provide these nav clues to users. The term vocabularies should be on the home page.

Transport protocols - doesn't show in the first draft. Suggestion to add under metadata conventions:

services and protocols or services, protocols, formats
include ogc, transport protocols

add to home page: pointer to vocabularies. site nav using dropdowns – mouse-overs

best practices – needs to be prominent in guides, and could appear as text on main pages of some sections, but doesn't require its own section

Community – a little ambiguity in this.
some of the projects involve the community; add MMI projects to the community section?
make it clear that "events" are not just MMI events

Projects – implementations
metadata projects or interoperability projects might be more clear
what mmi projects are there?
which projects use which metadata conventions or tools?

In Metadata Conventions section, eliminate "formats" subsection, it's not "parallel" to other standards;

Do we want to include data models - they can be enriched vocabularies and also enriched content standards - this may be out of our scope

In putting all the vocabularies in one folder or organizing them via a single scheme, we can also use tags so they can be re-ordered into smart folders. Tag vocabulary type, (sensors, units), format (xml, netcdf) etc.

Project timeline:

  1. Information architecture
    vocabs, then projects and tools
    create wireframe
    user test wireframe
8 users, at least 2 from each audience
    Target date March 21
  2. Design
    Target date April 13
  3. Back end development
plan will be ready atend of March
Merge front end design and back end implementation
    Target date May 21

Geoinformatics meeting - May 17 - could we be ready for roll-out by then?

Action Items

Continue to work on items in Metadata Conventions - Nan
Andy to work on Plone implementation with John and Luis
John and Luis to work on Projects section
