Ontologies - May 2007
Luis Bermudez presented "Semantic Mediator Architecture for Environmental Science" at the Geoinformatics conference in San Diego, CA this month, and MMI had several other representatives at the meeting. John Graybeal gave an ontology tutorial (and a content standards overview) at the International Data Exchange workshop on Building a Global Data Network for Studies of Earth Processes at the World's Plate Boundaries, a community of RIDGE/MARGINS geoscientists and developers.
At these workshops and on-line, MMI has been discussing (see draft) possible MMI roles in providing key services, such as a registry service for environmental science vocabularies. Most feedback from the community has been encouraging. This will be a key topic at the MMI Steering Committee meeting this month.
MMI has resumed its efforts to start the production of an ontology of oceanographic instrumentation. The team hopes to form a group to begin meeting on this topic in early June.
