Community Presence - March 2007

John Graybeal presented MMI to about 75 program and data managers of the European SeaDataNet project, and reported on sensor metadata interoperability to the Technical Team of the project. / MMI submitted a comprehensive set of comments to the North American Profile of the ISO 19115 standard. / MMI is continuing to work through the challenges of collaborating on IOOS CSC proposals.

John Graybeal traveled to Trieste, Italy mid-March to attend the SeaDataNet annual meeting, a European initiative to manage data from many countries. He gave a brief presentation on MMI to the full Annual Meeting, and a longer presentation on sensor metadata interoperability to the Technical Team.

The Trieste meeting also provided an excellent opportunity to see old friends of MMI (some for the first time!), strategize on technical approaches for vocabulary services, and meet Zdenka Willis (head of NOAA's IOOS Office) and Terry Tielkin (head of the National Oceanographic Data Centre).

MMI coordinated resources to evaluate the North American profile of ISO 19115. Comments from 3 institutions and 5 individuals were combined, with an emphasis on open community review of the standard. (The MMI site contains the comments in PDF).

MMI continues to assess how to be contribute to, and participate in, responses to the IOOS CSC solicitation for data management solutions. Key issues are being open to the community and avoiding conflicts of interest, while assuring sufficient resources to support funded work.
