Warmup

0900: Comments Concerning MMI (Stephanie Watson)

Each participant is encouraged to offer a one minute statement about their desires and vision for MMI.

0930: Setting the Context (John Graybeal)

Do we want MMI's mission to continue for the long term?

If so, what funding model(s) do we prefer?

Product: Prioritized list of long-term outcomes.

1015: BREAK

Topic I: What is MMI?

1030: MMI Breadth of Focus 1: Operational Services (Andy Maffei)

MMI provides one operational service, its web site, which does not cause major problems if it is not available.

Should MMI take on more demanding service provider roles that would require services to be available with minimal down time or failures?

Examples:

  • registries/catalogs for web services, vocabularies and maps, standards, or metadata
  • web services to perform semantic translations for applications

Product: Guidelines for deciding whether to provide an operational capability.

1115: TechTalk: Presenting Points of View with Plone (WHOI / Bermudez?)

1130: MMI Breadth of Focus 2: To Opine, or not to Opine (Matt Howard)

MMI provides many references, but relatively little context or guidance about those references. What should the MMI policy be for:

  • presenting an MMI or community opinion?
  • presenting "expert" opinions?
  • presenting individual's opinions?

How do these policies relate to the general MMI activity of consulting in the development of standards and technologies? (Too rigorous an application of the policies to our 'internal' developments would make progress difficult.)

How should MMI control its branding and logo to ensure that they reflect these policies?

Product: Recommended policies on each of the above (whether MMI should do them, and any policies it should follow if so), and commentary on whether the policies apply to MMI's contribution to individual techical activities (e.g., OOSTethys).

1230: LUNCH

1345: MMI Breadth of Focus 3: Environmental Metadata R Us? (Stephen Miller)

Product: Recommended strategy for, or against, addressing non-marine environmental science metadata issues in MMI's vision, goals, and web site.

1415: MMI Breadth of Focus 4: Constraints and Priorities (Philip Bogden?)

Are there other constraints that people see on what MMI should try to do?

Are there clear priorities that people see in MMI's tasks and activities?

Product: List of overriding constraints and priorities. (Not a list of our priorities, but identifying any tasks that are strategically of utmost importance.)

1440: BREAK

The Web

1500: WHOI--Directions and Opportunities for the Web

1545: Editorial Process/Workflow

What are the principles to follow when defining the editorial processes for the site?

Product: Principles and guidelines for web team.

1615: Web Directions and Ideas (Andy Maffei)

Discuss the directions and ideas for the web site to pursue.

Product: Recommendations to the web team for consideration or action.

Bigger Picture

1645: Increasing Science Value (Ralph Stephen)

How do we engage the scientific community and maximize our contribution to science?

How do we make our contribution more visible?

1745: Medium and Long-Term Strategy Brainstorming (?)

Get ideas on the table to frame how we might proceed in the next 3 years, so that we're set up for the future.
