How to incorporate W3C SSN work into MMI Device Ontology

  • JG: Conceivable have a focus on a particular area. Not much progress on the ontology. Unsure how to connect. Looking at the diagram, appears rather complex, especially regarding relationships.
  • LB: Modeling observations is important since devices are modeled as processes, which produce results (observations). Starting to look into observation models.

Review updates and proposed changes to ontology

Updates

Note: Added an "rdfs:label" column in the table for reviewing properties. The overall intend is to better qualify the URIs (more specifically, the local names) where appropriate while being able to take advantage of the (simpler) labels for display purposes.

* Renamed data properties startDate and endDate (with domain Deployment) with startDeploymentDate and endDeploymentDate, and associated startDate and endDate as the labels, respectively.

* Renamed data property hasDimension (with domain System) with hasSystemDimension and associated hasDimension as the label.

* Renamed data property isConsumable (with domain System) with isConsumableSystem and associated isConsumable as the label.

* Renamed basePlatform (with domain Deployment) with hasBasePlatform.

Proposed by JG:
+ Created datatype property: CalibrationSchedule calibrationScheduleHasOmissionConsequences (0..1) string
   label: hasOmissionConsequences
   {where the string is free text description of the effect of not following the Calibration Schedule}

Updated version: http://mmisw.org/ont/mmi/20090721T144744/device
NOTE: where available, the diagram shows the rdfs:labels associated to the entities; otherwise the corresponding local names.

Discussion

  • CR explained the latest updates with special emphasis on naming aspects for property URIs and corresponding labels (via rdfs:label). Although URIs are more for machines while labels are for humans, we try to make the URIs themselves meaningful, not opaque.
  • Note that the rdfs:label mechanism provides support for multiple (natural) languages.

Proposed additions and other changes

OperationalProcedure. See here.

  • JG: No a data management aspect
  • CR: The facets in the outline list have implicit use cases associated; should we make those more explicit?
  • JG, NG: CalibrationSchedule aspects are considered in the current use cases
  • We decided that is not a high priority to update the use cases page with the facets that we are incorporating in the ontology. However, as a working document, do update it whenever convenient.

Status of Action Items

  • [Roy] Follow up on current definitions questions/discussions with Nan -> pending
  • [Luis] Update observation ontology -> pending. Looking into observation models and other aspects like roles.
  • [all] Review instructions and facets outline and pick pending items (and/or suggest new ones) for inclusion in ontology. Send questions/suggestions to the mailing list -> ongoing

End Logistics: Action items, Attendees, Next meeting

New Action Items

  • [Bruce] Review data processing facets; send comments/proposed modifications to email list.
  • [Bob A] Review facets 2.d Output provided, 2.e Measurement technique, 3.c Operational restrictions, and send comments/proposed modifications to email list.

Attendees:

  • Bruce Andrews
  • Bob Arko
  • Luis Bermudez
  • Nan Galbraith
