Ontologies - September 2008

The ontology team held preliminary discussions with Stanford's BioPortal team about adopting their ontology repository code.

After promising late last month to finish development of an ontology repository in time for the next workshop in November, MMI's Ontology Team has been closely evaluating options for this work. After a conversation with the Stanford University Biomedical Informations group about their BioPortal software, the team has installed BioPortal ontology registry components at MMI and evaluated them. Preliminary results suggest this may provide a suitable basis for development; more evaluation and discussion will take place next month before deciding.

The team has also been improving VINE (the ontology mapping tool). Documentation on guides for ontology providers and the semantic architecture have also been improved. A significant number of technical questions and issues have been identified for resolution next month.

The device ontology work continued, with the group determining that the use cases should be further developed to identify suitable properties for the ontology.
