Ontologies—November 2009

Development of concrete instantiations of the Device Ontology and preparations to host the ontology developed by W3C Semantic Sensor Network XG in the ORR.

Device Ontology

The team has started the development of concrete instantiations of the ontology with the main goal of assessing its suitability for capturing real-world scenarios. The feedback obtained so far has already provided valuable input to revise the ontology itself. To better appreciate the various elements involved in the creation of instances in an ontology representation, team members are using standard tools to create the instances. Screencasts demonstrating the usage of Protégé and TopBraid Composer were created to help in this purpose. The actual mechanism to create the instances may be more automatic, for example from a database using appropriate scripts.

Preparations to host the ontology developed by W3C Semantic Sensor Network XG (http://www.w3.org/2005/Incubator/ssn/) in the MMI Ontology Registry and Repository (ORR) have started. The registered entry will be associated to the new account 'ssnx.' (Group access for update purposes is a feature not yet provided by ORR.)
