Ontologies—October 2009
Device Ontology
Abstract submitted to Oceans Sciences'10, led by Bob Arko:"MMI and R2R: Applying a Device Ontology to Research Vessels in the Academic Fleet"
Discussion continued regarding the differentiation between static and dynamic aspects, and how they could/should be captured in the ontology. There is no, however, any consensus about this. We continue to combine the two concerns in the same ontology.
The team is starting efforts to move to implementation and examples using the ontology. This will provide valuable feedback. It is proposed that the approach be based on a plan for a release. This includes the following aspects:
- Determine what is necessary to complete an official release of the ontology.
- Identify available resources and who shall complete which parts to complete the release.
- Determine a deadline for the release.
- Determine mechanisms to "advertise" the device ontology, which ideally should include published papers (for example, about demonstration of use, experiences, perhaps modeling challenges, etc.)
- Determine next steps, particularly in terms of strategies for integration with similar efforts in other groups, and determine focus points for the OntDev group.
