MMI Ontology Registry and Repository

This subteam of the MMI Ontology group is focused on creating a new ontology repository for marine and environmental science.

Every community in the environmental sciences has their own set of terms (sometimes many sets of terms!) that they use to communicate with each other. As different communities need to work together, they need to come to shared understanding about the terms that they use.

As computers play an ever-increasing role in science, the vocabularies have been moving to the computer. But they have not been shared in any systematic way.

The MMI Ontology Registry fixes that issue. By providing a single registry and storage area for environmental science vocabularies, and encouraging the use of common, interoperable formats for those vocabularies, the MMI Ontology Registry supports cross-community, cross-boundary exchange and understanding of community vocabularies.

This product is being developed by MMI, with the support of Southeastern Universities Research Association and the BioPortal project. We will release many tools and documents throughout the rest of 2008. Please stay tuned for more information, or contact John Graybeal of MMI.
