2008 MMI Planning Mtg Priorities List

Results from end-of-day brainstorm session on MMI task prioritization

At the end of the day-long planning meeting, the participants were asked to brainstorm appropriate criteria for prioritizing MMI work.  (Note this is not quite the same as 'evaluating MMI work', although much or all of the list may be useful for deriving evaluation criteria as well.)

Here is the list as it was produced at the meeting. We agreed that reorganization/improvement was possible at a later date.

  • Does it fill an unmet need in the community?
  • Is it a concrete, specifically-requested activity?
  • Does it further the main vision of MMI?
  • Does it increase MMI visibility?
  • Does it respond to global scientific needs?
  • Does it integrate well with other activities?
  • Possible funding by interested sponsors?
  • Does it enable data discovery?
  • Is MMI uniquely capable of carrying this out?
  • Is it something that isn't being adequetely done by someone else?
  • Does it enable more better cooler science/insight?
  • Does it promote data interoperability?
  • Does it improve the business or life of one or more scientists?
  • Is it achievable with the resources available?
  • Does it sound interesting/cool/fun?
  • Steering committee preference?
  • Does it have an end / identifiable results?
  • Does it have an identified metric for success?
  • Does it promote community metadata education?
  • Does it have good return on investment?
  • Does it fit with major societal needs?
