Review of action items and writing assignments

List of Guides elements (http://marinemetadata.org/guides/internal/guidedesign/)

  • Decided not to add elements for defining the audience or the prerequisites - too many readers do not fit neatly into Scientist or Technician, and prerequisites can put readers off.
  • We will add a sidebar on "critical concepts" that lists the concepts and terms that readers should be familiar with, with links to further information on each.
  • The need for better navigation tools for readers was noted, but deferred to post-Drupal . For now, a good Table of Contents helps.
  • [Caryn]: update the table of elements to add Critical Concepts
  • [All]: for all new guides, be sure to include the guides elements of Critical Concepts, Additional Resources, Acronyms, and Definitions (navigation and a feedback survey will come in Drupal)

List of standards and guides to include in the "Review of Current Standards" document (http://marinemetadata.org/guides/internal/stdslist/)

  • The document will cover "widely used, general-purpose content standards and specifications"
  • Standards: Z39.50, OAIS, and ADN will be added to the content standards list (so final list is: CSDGM, ISO 19115 and 19139, Dublin Core, DIF, Z39.50, OAIS and ADN)
  • Organizations: GCMD and Library of Congress will be added (as well as any additional bodies behind the standards on the list), IEEE (not general-purpose), OASIS (a protocol, not a standard) and W3W will not be included. NISO will be detailed along with ISO
  • Eventually, should create a similar document for protocols.

Revision of the Organizational structure (http://marinemetadata.org/guides/guidestoc):

  • Section III of the organizational structure will be renamed "Vocabularies: dictionaries, ontologies, etc. It will contain:
  • A. Controlled Vocabularies Introduction (including a listing of the main types)
    B. Importance of Controlled Vocabularies
    C. Types of Controlled Vocabularies: This is where the sections on Dictionaries/Thesauri and Ontologies will be moved
    D. Choosing and Implementing Controlled Vocabularies
    E. A Last Resort: Developing a Local Controlled Vocabulary

  • In general, the term Controlled Vocabulary should be used throughout the site, and the term Metadata Dictionary avoided, as the latter is not clearly defined within the community.
  • [Caryn] will re-write section A in light of the new organization, and fold her old "what is a dictionary " and "what is a thesaurus" document into this.
  • [Luis] will send Caryn a long list of CV types he knows of.

Projecting Guides future work

  • Tables for later discussion
  • [Luis]: will send further clarification of what he would like the guides team to provide with respect to future activities and timelines.
