DIVE Overview

Mission, Goals & Objectives, Logistics, etc

The DIVE is designed as a short-term commitment of metadata practitioners.  Each DIVE team will work to Discover existing resources, Interrogate each discovered resource, Validate the resources, and Educate the marine metadata community on their findings.

DIVE Mission

Focused research into a specific area of need in the marine sciences community.

DIVE Goals and Objectives

  • Identify existing resources;
  • Develop criteria for evaluation of resources;
  • Evaluate resources;
  • Share findings with the marine sciences community.

DIVE Logistics

DIVE leaders will be self-identified from the MMI Technical Team. Additional participants will be volunteers from the research community (scientists, programmers, user community, etc), resource providers, and vendors. In the first DIVE meeting, participants will agree upon a meeting schedule, specific goals/objectives, and establish a work-space on the MMI website. Meetings will take place on a regular basis, generally as teleconferences (phone, video, or other medium, as determined by DIVE participants).

DIVE Schedule

It is expected that each DIVE will persist for approximately three months. DIVE work may continue after this deadline, only if agreed to by DIVE participants. The MMI DIVE initiative is designed to rotate among current issues in the marine sciences community. To accomplish this, DIVE topics, leadership, and team membership will rotate on a regular basis.

Inaugural DIVE: Metadata Tools

The inaugural DIVE will focus on metadata tools - the technical tools used to generate, publish, translate, and validate metadata. Tools are essential within the metadata community, and there are a plethora of tools available. The inaugural DIVE will explore these tools.
