Approach

This document reflects our strategy for the conduct of the workshop, and preparations leading up to it. It is provided as a planning aid and an indication of the scope of the workshop. The planning continues to evolve, so readers are encouraged to provide feedback to the organizers.

Most of the guidance for the workshop is available in the Guidance folder.

Workshop planning is being discussed using a public email list. You are welcome to join the workshop planning forum if you are interested in participating in the preparations.

In advance of workshop

  • Identify domain-specific teams and item concepts.
  • Collect vocabularies for each domain.
  • Provide preliminary training in ontology concepts and workshop tools.
  • Review vocabularies, identify most appropriate one(s) to use as baseline in each domain.
  • Harmonize vocabularies (bring them into the same OWL format).
  • Dry run the workshop process (next section) and document it on-line for others to use.

During Workshop

  • Demonstrate value of vocabulary maps (finding terms, finding data, using data).
  • Provide final training in vocabulary mapping, ontology concepts, and tool usage.
  • Break up into teams and begin mapping vocabularies.
  • Reassemble daily for issue resolution, lesson sharing, and possibly additional training.
  • Publish final ontologies on MMI site.
  • If possible, demonstrate value of vocabulary maps using new products.
  • Identify "best" (most complete, mature, useful, publishable?) resulting vocabularies
  • Identify leads to continue maintaining each ontology.

After Workshop

  • Publish papers about specific domain vocabularies (and science results).
  • Publish papers about the process.
  • Update documentation of process and lessons learned.
  • Determine best way to promulgate the process so that others can do it.
  • Figure out how to keep the ontologies updated.
